AmazingE FAST EV Charging Station Review

Portable yet powerful
Published on February 26, 2022

If you thought that the AmazingE offered impressive performance for such a small charger, then you’d better check out its big brother, the AmazingE FAST. Also belonging to the ClipperCreek sub-brand (which now belongs to Enphase), this EV charger comes from a company known for its high quality and excellent customer service.

One of the awesome features of portable chargers is that can you use them for both daily charging and emergency use. Thanks to this one’s NEMA 4 rating, you can be confident that it will take whatever nature throws at it while you’re getting your EV juiced up.

  • Installation

As this is a portable EV charger, there isn’t really a need to install the AmazingE FAST with the NEMA 14-50 plug unless you plan on mounting it in a permanent location. You’ll find a few holes in the casing if you do intend to mount it, though it is easy to lift the unit off of the screws and take it with you if you need to, rather than being forced to unscrew it. Just don’t try plugging it into a standard 120-volt electric outlet– the AmazingE FAST needs to be used on a 30 amp dedicated circuit.

However, there is a hardwired version of the AmazingE FAST that could be just as easily mounted, though the power cable might be a bit trickier to connect. As always, we recommend that you hire a licensed and bonded electrician to safely install any hardwired EV charging stations in your home.

The AmazingE FAST delivers 7.7 kW of power to your EV, allowing you to recover up to 30 miles of range each hour that you charge. It can also automatically restart in the event of a power outage, allowing your vehicle to continue charging once power has been restored. Compared to the AmazingE, this unit’s charging cable is significantly thicker and heavier.

While the AmazingE FAST doesn’t come with a cable management system or connector holster, you can order both of those through ClipperCreek’s website for $19 each. There's also another nice alternative holster and cable hook combo available on Amazon instead.

    Testing

We make sure to put the EV chargers we review through tests that simulate real-world experiences that the units might face, and the AmazingE FAST did not escape our critical eye. We tested both its durability and its reaction to extreme cold weather environments to make sure to give you the most comprehensive review possible.

    The Drop Test

We dropped the AmazingE FAST from a height of about five feet over ten times to see how it would hold up to rough handling. But in spite of our harsh treatment, we couldn’t find any cracks in the outer casing or any other visible damage like chips or scratches, and it worked just fine after being plugged back in. The unit appears to be very solidly built.

    The Cable Deep Freeze Test

When we didn’t include the freeze test in our initial charger review video above, our followers made sure to point it out, so we ended up making a separate supplimentary video to make up for it. We kept the AmazingE FAST in our commercial freezer for 24 hours this time, and after we pulled it out, the temperature inside of the freezer measured at -10° F (-23° C). The cable wasn’t super flexible, but it wasn’t terrible, either; we’d guess that it was better than 75 percent of other cables we tested on other units that delivered a similar amount of power. As a result, we’d feel confident recommending it for more extreme environments.

Since our ChargerRater system is intended for permanently mounted, high-powered wall chargers, we didn’t break down a point-based rating of the AmazingE FAST.

The AmazingE FAST ended up scoring 4.2 stars out of 5 for my personal rating. For a small portable charger packing 32 amps and a rugged waterproof case, this EV charging station would be a great choice for anyone with flexibility in mind.

The AmazingE FAST is currently only available in a hardwired version that can also be bought from Enphase for $399.99. Take a look at our full review and drop us a comment with your thoughts down below.
