AmazingE EV Charging Station Review

An impressive little charger from a popular brand

It’s not often that we get the chance to review portable Level 2 EV chargers, since there aren’t a lot of reputable models out on the market today. But the AmazingE brand is one of them. A sub-brand of ClipperCreek (which now belongs to Enphase), AmazingE products are based out of Auburn, California, and has been selling EV charging equipment longer than any other company that we know of. On top of that, it has a reputation for producing high-quality EV chargers and offering good customer support.

What’s awesome about portable chargers is that not only can you use them for daily charging, but you can also toss them in the trunk to have on hand in case of emergency. And with this one’s NEMA 4 rating, you can be sure that it’s sturdy enough to handle harsh weather.

  • Hits

  • Small and portable enough to take with you
  • One of the least expensive EV charging options on the market
  • Manufactured from quality components that can take a beating
  • Misses

  • No included connector holster
  • Practically no cable management (unless you count a wimpy Velcro tie)
  • Doesn’t work with a standard 120V outlet, meaning you’ll still need a specialized outlet to use it
  • Installation

Since this is a portable EV charger, the AmazingE doesn’t really have need of traditional installation unless you plan on mounting it in a permanent location. There are a couple of holes in the casing which can be used to mount it to a wall, and the system also allows you to lift it off of the screws and take it with you, so you don’t have to unscrew it.

The unit does need to be used on a 30 amp dedicated circuit, however– you can’t just plug it into a regular 120-volt outlet and expect it to work.

The AmazingE offers 3.8 kW of power, which will allow you to charge your EV up to 3 times faster than the average Level 1 charger. Since this isn’t a high-powered charger, the portable unit recharges an EV at a rate of approximately 10 to 12 miles of range per hour, depending on the vehicle’s efficiency. Looking for a portable EV charger that packs more of a punch? Check out the AmazingE FAST for 7.7 kW of power instead.

While the AmazingE does not come with a cable management system or connector holster, both of these are available through ClipperCreek’s website for $19 each. There's also another nice alternative holster and cable hook combo available on Amazon instead.

    Testing

When we assess our EV charging stations, we make sure to put them through testing that simulates real-world conditions that the units might face over the course of regular use. Just like in many of our other reviews, the AmazingE faced an evaluation of its durability and ability to withstand sub-zero temperatures.

    The Drop Test

We took the AmazingE and dropped it from about five feet in the air to the ground about ten times each in order to mimic the wear they might receive from being dropped during handling. When we checked to see if the outer casing cracked or if there was any other visible damage, we didn’t find any. It really seems to be a solidly built piece of equipment.

    The Cable Deep Freeze Test

While the freeze test didn’t make it into the initial charger review video linked above, we ended up making a separate supplimentary video to show how the AmazingE held up in cold weather since our followers missed it. The unit ended up staying in the commercial freezer for 24 hours this time around, and when we pulled it out, the temperature inside of the freezer measured at -10° F (-23° C). The cable came out quite flexible in spite of being frozen, and we’d feel confident recommending it for more extreme environments.

While you might be used to seeing our ChargerRating system break down the rating of each EV charging station that we review, we did not use it with the AmazingE because that point-based system is intended for permanently mounted, high-powered wall chargers.

The AmazingE came away from our review with my personal rating of 4.0 out of 5. For a small, lightweight, 16-amp portable charger, it does its job well. It’s built very well, and its 3-year warranty and safety certifications make it a well-rounded EV charging station that’s more than able to suit your needs.

The AmazingE is available from Amazon for $199. Check out our full review and then let us know what you think of it in the comments below.
