BP Pulse Launches EV Charging Hub Near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport

The site has 40 stalls and supports both CCS1- and NACS-compatible EVs.

BP Pulse has just launched another DC fast-charging hub, this time located three miles from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD).

With 40 stalls and a mixture of 150-kW and 400-kW chargers, it’s one of the largest stations in Illinois. There are CCS1 and NACS connectors available for maximum compatibility.

Additionally, the hub includes a covered canopy and free Wi-Fi. The site benefits from the adjacent BP-branded gas station, which has a convenience store, coffee shop, and restaurants nearby.

For BP Pulse, providing EV charging at major airports like ORD is a strategy. The network has already deployed EV charging hubs at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), near San Francisco International Airport (SFO), near Boston Logan Airport (BOS), near Houston’s Hobby Airport, and Fort Lauderdale (FLL) International Airport. Sites like these are dual-purpose — for ride-hail drivers and local EV drivers.

Sujay Sharma, CEO of bp pulse Americas, said:

“Opening our sixth major airport hub is a significant milestone in our commitment to expanding our EV charging network across the United States. By strategically placing our hubs in high-demand locations like airports, we’re making it easier for drivers to access the fast and reliable charging they need. Locating this hub next to a bp retail site also means EV drivers can benefit from the convenient amenities already offered to customers today.”

Large EV charging hubs are expensive to install. BP Pulse’s latest charging hub at Chicago’s ORD was funded partially through a $500,000 rebate from ComEd (through its Make Ready Rebate program) and partially through a $320,000 grant from the Illinois EPA’s Driving a Cleaner Illinois Program (one of over 300 EV charging projects, with total funding of $50 million).

BP Pulse: 70 Sites, 500+ Stalls

According to the Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC), the BP Pulse network has approximately 70 locations and more than 500 DC fast-charging stalls.

The network’s map shows that the charging sites are located in major metropolitan areas rather than along highways. We assume BP Pulse considers these locations to be the most beneficial / profitable.

Globally, BP Pulse has more than 40,000 charging points (AC and DC) and plans to have 100,000 stalls by 2030.
