Chargeway App Introduces Real-Time Public EV Charging Pricing

The app can display the price per kWh, as well as variable kWh pricing throughout the day.

Chargeway, a communication and software platform dedicated to simplifying the EV charging experience, has just added dynamic public EV charging pricing to its mobile app for EV drivers.

The Chargeway app features over 85,000 EV charging stations from more than 50 networks across the United States and Canada. Its user-friendly visual system enables users to not only locate charging stations, but also provides them with a trip planner. Now, with the dynamic pricing info, it’s even more powerful, as one can check real-time pricing and track how prices change throughout the day.

State Of Charge‘s Tom Moloughney had an opportunity to talk with Matt Teske, the founder and CEO of Chargeway, about the app’s latest new feature.

The ability to view the price per kWh of various charging stations is becoming more important, especially as charging networks transition to dynamic charging. The new Chargeway update offers an interesting layer of comparison for nearby charging sites.

Knowing the pricing not only enables the selection of a less expensive site, but it can also indicate that it’s better to charge at a different time. There are even examples where two nearby sites from the same network have different prices because they source from two different utility providers.

If one additionally configures the app for a particular EV, including its state of charge and charge limit, the app can even estimate the total cost of a charging session. That’s where we can really see that the total difference between various sites sometimes reaches $10 or even $20.

According to Chargeway, the new features related to public charging and pricing include:

  • Real-time pricing for over half of public charging stations in North America
  • Daily price per kWh rates as well as variable kWh pricing throughout the day for individual stations within the station details
  • Chargeway Plus subscribers (30-day free trial, $5.99/month) see kWh prices directly on the charging station map and option for estimated total cost to charge based on time of day, their EV battery state of charge (SOC), and charge limit
  • Key takeaway: With one tap on the station map Chargeway provides drivers clear visibility at a public charging station for plug type (color), power level and charge time (number), real-time charger availability, and price

The most advanced options are available for Chargeway Plus subscribers (30-day free trial, $5.99/month). Considering the free trial and cost savings at cheaper sites, it might be worth considering.

Matt Teske, Chargeway’s Founder and CEO, said:

“Our mission at Chargeway from day one has been to simplify ‘electric fuel’ for every driver to help accelerate EV adoption. Now with one tap on the Chargeway station map drivers can easily see what we in the industry know the public must learn: Can I connect my car here? How long will charging take? How many chargers are available? How much will my charge session cost? With our latest update to Chargeway users can now see ‘electric fuel pricing’ for thousands of stations at a glance.”

“With EV incentives expiring and consumers having more options to purchase either new or used EVs, the industry needs to be very focused on how we communicate why EVs are a great option, and that revolves around the electric fuel experience. Car buyers are not going to rush into dealerships to buy vehicles that run on a fuel they don’t understand or trust. Chargeway visually simplifies all aspects of the charging experience away from home for plug, power, price and availability. Making this simple is how we solve ‘charging anxiety’ and create consumer confidence in EVs.”
