Electrify America, one of North America’s largest DC fast-charging networks and part of the Volkswagen Group, recorded significant growth in 2024. The company recently released an infographic with its latest stats.
Electrify America (including Electrify Canada) has more than 1,000 DC fast-charging locations and over 4,800 publicly accessible chargers installed. That’s compared to over 900 sites and over 4,000 chargers reported a year earlier.
2024 Stats
In 2024, the network experienced a growth in consumer demand of more than 50% year-over-year to over 16 million charging sessions. The chargers dispensed over 600 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy — 65% more than in 2023 (380+ GWh). This indicates that the average energy per session improved by about a tenth.
- Charging sessions: 16+ million (up 50% from 10.9 million in 2023)
- Energy dispensed: 600+ GWh (up 65% from 380+ GWh in 2023)
- Average session: about 37.5 kWh (up 8% from 34.8 kWh in 2023)
The average charging session two years ago was 33.0 kWh, so we can see that year after year, EVs consume a bit more energy on average. That’s probably mainly related to the larger battery packs in many new EVs.
Assuming 4,800+ chargers (the real number was lower through the year as new ones are gradually deployed), we can calculate the average energy dispensed per charger.
In 2024, the network’s average daily throughput per charger was roughly 340 kWh. That’s not bad, especially compared to some 260 kWh per day per charger in 2023.
This 30% increase year-over-year is the main reason behind the growth of usage. The company also limits slow charging through the expansion of its 85% state-of-charge (SOC) pilot program.
One charger, on average, charges about nine vehicles per day. In 2023, it was closer to 7.5 EVs per day.
Electrify America’s charger stats, assuming 4,800+ chargers in 2024 (vs. 4,000+ in 2023):
- Energy dispensed per day per charger: roughly 340 kWh (vs. 260 kWh in 2023)
- Number of sessions per day per charger: roughly 9.1 (vs. 7.5 in 2023)
2025 Plans
Electrify America plans to expand its network by 30% in 2025. If we understand it correctly, we could be talking about the installation of 1,400 new chargers (over 6,200 total) by the end of the year.
“In 2025, Electrify America expects the demand for high-speed charging to continue growing. Its focus will remain on expanding the network by 30% and implementing solutions that meet the changing needs of EV drivers.”
The infographic also mentions the prioritization of larger stations (10+ stalls) and the introduction of NACS (SAE J3400) connectors. In 2023, Electrify America announced that NACS connectors are coming in 2025.
An interesting finding is that 170 sites are equipped with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to manage the demand load. That’s up to 17% of all stations or about one in six.
