Ford Pulls The Plug From F-150 Lightning, Announces F-150 Lightning EREV

Sales of the model were lower than anticipated.

Ford has just announced groundbreaking changes to its business and electrification plans, which now focus more on hybrids rather than all-electric models. The first victim of the new direction is the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning.

By 2030, the company would like to achieve about a 50% share of electrified vehicles (hybrids, extended-range electric vehicles, and battery-electric vehicles) in its global sales volume, up from 17% today. At the same time, the loss-making Ford Model e business unit is now expected to reach profitability by 2029.

Ford F-150 Lightning (BEV) Dropped

The Ford F-150 Lightning was the first modern all-electric pickup truck on the US market. Sales began in 2022 with over 15,000 units delivered that year. The volume increased to over 24,000 the next year, and peaked at 33,510 in 2024. However, in 2025, the volume decreased, and after 11 months, it stands at 25,583. Cumulatively, Ford sold nearly 100,000 F-150 Lightning vehicles in the US.

Sales volume is clearly lower than initially anticipated, and profitability was questionable. Over the past four years, competition in the EV pickup segment has intensified with the introduction of new models. Meanwhile, the $7,500 federal tax credit ended, making the business case more difficult.

Today, Ford officially announced that production of the current Ford F-150 Lightning has concluded. This is the end.

Additionally, the company no longer plans to produce select larger electric vehicles “where the business case has eroded due to lower-than-expected demand, high costs and regulatory changes.” The previously planned next-generation full-size all-electric pickup has been ditched as well.

Ford F-150 Lightning EREV Announced

Ford may have dropped the battery-electric F-150 Lightning, but history does not end here, as the company has announced the next-generation Ford F-150 Lightning EREV. EREV means Extended Range Electric Vehicle, or simply a series-hybrid. We don’t know yet whether there will be plug-in functionality (external charging) or not.

An EREV has an all-electric powertrain, like a BEV, but it also includes an engine that acts as a generator. This way, Ford wants to solve the issue of range, charging, and towing. There will be no compromise, the company says.

“Unlike a traditional hybrid, the F-150 Lightning EREV is propelled 100 percent by electric motors. This ensures owners get the pure EV driving experience they love – including rapid acceleration and quiet operation – while eliminating the need to stop and charge during long-distance towing. Like the current F-150 Lightning, the next-gen version will also offer exportable electricity that can power everything from work sites to camp sites to homes during a power outage.”

Here is what we noted about the Ford F-150 Lightning EREV:

  • Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV): propelled 100% by electric motors
  • Range of more than 700 miles
  • 0-60 MPH in less than 5 seconds
  • Powerful towing capability
  • Power export features

The new Ford F-150 Lightning EREV will be assembled at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan, just like the original all-electric Lightning. Details and a launch schedule will be announced at a later date.

Doug Field, Ford’s chief EV, digital, and design officer, said:

“The F-150 Lightning is a groundbreaking product that demonstrated an EV pickup can still be a great “F-Series”. Our next-generation F-150 Lightning EREV will be every bit as revolutionary. It delivers everything Lightning customers love – near instantaneous torque and pure electric driving. But with a high-power generator enabling an estimated range of 700+ miles, it tows like a locomotive. Heavy-duty towing and cross-country travel will be as effortless as the daily commute.”

A New Mid-Size All-Electric Pickup

With the F-150 Lightning out and F-150 Lightning EREV in, Ford announced multiple other strategic changes. One of them is an all-new Universal EV Platform for smaller, affordable models.

The first new, more affordable model, based on the Universal EV Platform, will be “the fully connected mid-size pickup truck, assembled at Louisville Assembly Plant starting in 2027”. There are no details available on the smaller all-electric pickup other than the LFP batteries.
