Volkswagen EVs Finally Gain Access to Tesla Supercharging Network

Supercharging Volkswagen ID.4 and Volkswagen ID. Buzz will be possible starting November 18, 2025.

Volkswagen has announced that its ID.4 and ID. Buzz all-electric vehicles will be able to access the Tesla Supercharging network* in North America, starting November 18, 2025.

The company does not mention the legacy Volkswagen e-Golf model, so we assume that it’s not part of the deal. According to our data, Volkswagen has cumulatively sold more than 114,000 ID.4 and close to 5,000 ID. Buzz in the US. Sales of the e-Golf between 2014 and 2021 exceeded 19,000.

* More than 25,000 Tesla Supercharging stalls (V3 and V4 dispensers) are available to Tesla’s NACS partners in North America.

The announcement comes months after the previously expected timeline of June/July 2025, and two months after Porsche and Audi (all three brands are part of the wider Volkswagen Group).

Volkswagen Supercharger access is coming slightly later than some other brands, but its arrival is still great news for drivers, as it vastly increases access to DC fast-charging locations.

Volkswagen says that ID.4 and ID. Buzz owners can locate compatible Supercharging stations and pay for charging using the Tesla app. The German manufacturer does not mention infotainment or its software domain, so we assume that the integration of Superchargers into Volkswagen’s app is not yet ready.

The manufacturer also noted that existing owners will receive information about “a recommended software update”:

“Owners of certain 2024 and 2025 ID.4 and ID. Buzz vehicles will receive information about a recommended software update to support optimal charging behavior.”

Adapters

Volkswagen EVs are equipped with the CCS1 charging port. To use Tesla Superchargers (and other NACS chargers), drivers must use a NACS-to-CCS1 adapter.

According to Volkswagen, a Volkswagen-approved NACS-to-CCS1 adapter can be purchased from Volkswagen dealers or online at parts.vw.com. It’s priced at $200, but the original owners of 2025 model year cars can get a $100 rebate, while the 2026 model year cars come standard with the adapter.

  • 2026 EVs: Adapter is standard
  • 2025* and earlier EVs: Adapter costs $200
    * Original owners of 2025 model year cars can get a $100 rebate

“For current Volkswagen ID.4 and ID. Buzz owners, adapters will be available through Volkswagen dealers or online at parts.vw.com, priced with an MSRP of $200. Original owners of MY25 ID.4 and ID. Buzz vehicles are eligible to receive a $100 rebate on the adapter. All rebate claims must be submitted within 90 days of the adapter purchase date and no later than July 15, 2026, see dealer for details. Adapters will come standard with all model year 2026 Volkswagen EVs.”

According to Drive Tesla Canada, the adapter’s price in Canada is $304 CAD.

Petar Danilovic, Senior Vice President of Product Marketing and Strategy at Volkswagen of America, said:

“This is great news for our EV owners. They will now be able to access the more than 25,000 DC fast chargers on the Tesla Supercharger network across the United States, in addition to the more than 5,000 fast chargers on Electrify America’s grid. This makes life much more convenient, whether you are taking a road trip or you rely on public charging should home charging not be an option.”

Who Will Be Next?

The list of Tesla’s NACS partners has reached roughly 20 companies, including (chronologically): Ford, Rivian, General Motors (Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC), Volvo, Polestar, Nissan, Lucid, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Genesis, Kia, Honda, Acura, Jaguar Land Rover, Audi, Porsche, Toyota (including Lexus), Subaru, and most recently Volkswagen. The Subaru and Volkswagen brands are still in the “Coming Soon” category on Tesla’s website, but it’s just a matter of an update.

The “Coming Soon” list includes BMW. There are also a few companies not listed at all, such as Stellantis, Mazda (now without an EV on the market), Mitsubishi (also without an EV), and some more exotic nameplates.

Ultimately, all EV manufacturers in North America are expected to become Tesla’s NACS partners, as the network holds a huge market share of over 50% of DC charging stalls. Meanwhile, other charging networks have started deploying chargers with NACS (SAE J3400) connectors, while manufacturers are now launching their first EVs with NACS charging inlets (see a list of NACS-compatible models here).

The locations of Tesla Superchargers can be seen on Tesla’s interactive Supercharging map (visible here). It allows users to filter results to show which Superchargers are available to NACS partners, which includes about two-thirds of the North American network.

It’s great to see Volkswagen EVs finally gaining access to Tesla’s supercharging network! This is a big step forward for EV adoption. Can’t wait to see how this impacts charging infrastructure in the US!

Let’s not assume VW e-Golf won’t have access. I am going to choose “ID.4” in the Tesla app and test out whether my e-Golf will work. It works just fine at Magic Dock locations.

      Barry,

The VW Website specifically states the adapter is not for e-Golf and that ID.4 require latest software upgrade to safely charge at Tesla Superchargers. Electrify America had the Plug and Charge feature activated for about a month, several years ago, then pulled it from their stations. I feel like there must be a specific handshake between the vehicle and charger since there are no controls on the Tesla charging stations.

This DC Fast Charger Adapter from Volkswagen allows you to charge your Combined Charging System (CCS) charge port equipped Volkswagen ID.4 or ID. Buzz models at DC fast charging stations that feature North American Charging System (NACS) connector charging. This includes compatible DC fast chargers in the vast Tesla Supercharger network across the United States and Canada. Includes 1 adapter.

NOTE: Important information on proper use and technical specifications can be found in the downloadable user’s guide under the ATTACHMENTS tab.

Actual charging times will vary based on several factors, including battery state of charge, battery condition, ambient and battery temperature and charging equipment capability. Frequent and consecutive fast charging can permanently decrease battery capacity. Battery degradation may decrease charging speeds.

NOTICE: These NACS adapters are only for use with compatible DC fast chargers and cannot be used to charge on NACS-equipped Level 1 or Level 2 AC chargers, including home chargers and Tesla Destination Chargers. A software update is strongly recommended for certain vehicles prior to using the adapter. Information and instructions pertaining to that update has been separately sent to owners of affected vehicles.

Proper installation required. Professional installation may be recommended. See owners literature and dealer for details. Not for Volkswagen e-Golf.

      Fits ID. Buzz, ID.4

So far unable to get e-Golf to charge at NACS Supercharger locations. In the Tesla app I see the message “Unknown error occurred”. I chose ID.4 as my car in the app.
