Following Ford, Rivian, and General Motors, two more companies — Volvo Cars and Polestar (both owned by Geely) — have gained access to the vast Tesla Supercharging network in the US and Canada. The official opening of more than 17,800 Tesla Superchargers happened on October 29, 2024.
Because all Volvo and Polestar EVs on the market are equipped with a CCS1 charging inlet, access to Tesla Superchargers and other North American Charging Standard (NACS) chargers will be possible by use of a NACS-to-CCS1 adapter.
Volvo
Volvo says that NACS-to-CCS1 adapters will be included with the purchase of the latest 2025 model year electric cars, like the all-new Volvo EX90 and the Volvo EX40/EC40 duo (formerly known as the XC40 Recharge/C40 Recharge).
However, users of current Volvo EVs will have to buy the adapters on their own to gain access to NACS-compatible chargers. Volvo’s authorized retailers offer the NACS-to-CCS1 adapters at an MSRP of $230 in the US and $310 (CAD) in Canada. Shipments are promised to start on November 18, 2024.
Finding, accessing, and paying will be all possible within Volvo’s software domain:
“With the Volvo Cars app, drivers of fully electric Volvo cars in the United States and Canada can find tens of thousands of public charging stations, get real-time information on availability of chargers, and pay for their charging session through one single interface, making charging a Volvo car easy. Charging stations – and directions to them — can also be found by asking the Google Assistant in the infotainment system.”
Mike Cottone, President of Volvo Car USA and Canada, said:
“As part of our journey to electrification, we want to make life with an electric car, including our new flagship EX90, as seamless as possible. Today we are taking a major step to providing access to easy and convenient charging infrastructure for Volvo drivers in the United States and Canada, furthering our commitment to EV adoption.”

Polestar
Polestar’s press release mirrors Volvo’s announcement. Polestar EV users will gain access to more than 17,800 Tesla Superchargers by using NACS-to-CCS1 adapters, which can be ordered through their local Polestar Service Point. Deliveries of the adapters are planned for mid-November.
Anders Gustafsson, Head of Polestar North America, said:
“By offering customers access to the Tesla Supercharger network, we are able to provide owners with more charging options than ever before, elevating the Polestar ownership experience with more efficient charging convenience and capabilities. With the adoption of this standard, in combination with approximately 10,000 CCS DC fast chargers, current and prospective Polestar customers now have access to nearly 27,800 DC fast chargers and can feel more confident in their ability to charge on the go.”

Tesla also noted that Volvo and Polestar are now welcome at Superchargers, while Nissan and Mercedes-Benz are next in line with a “Coming Soon” sticker.

In the future, Volvo intends to launch EVs with an NACS charging inlet, so no NACS adapters will be required (though CCS1 adapters will be useful). Similarly, Polestar also intends to switch from CCS1 to NACS.
