Walmart EV Charging Network Grows With 10 Stations Now Live

Another 12 locations are coming soon.

This Spring, State Of Charge‘s Tom Moloughney visited Walmart, which had announced a bold plan to deploy thousands of DC fast chargers. At the time, the Walmart EV charging network only had three sites available, including two pilot locations.

As of the beginning of November, the network has expanded to include a total of 10 locations. That’s not a bad start, as Ionna — the fastest growing new network — deployed more than 30 stations (it started a bit earlier, though).

Available Locations

Most of the Walmart charging stations (8 out of 10) are installed in Texas. The other two are in Arkansas and in Oklahoma:

  • Springdale Supercenter in Arkansas (pilot location)
  • Checotah Supercenter in Oklahoma
  • Cross Roads Supercenter in Texas (pilot location)
  • McKinney Supercenter in Texas (1st official location)
  • Murphy Supercenter in Texas
  • Bedford Supercenter in Texas
  • Fort Worth Supercenter in Texas
  • Plano Supercenter in Texas
  • Westworth Village Supercenter in Texas
  • North Richland Hills Supercenter in Texas

Twelve additional locations are listed as “coming soon”, including six in Texas, four in Arizona, one in Georgia, and one in Florida.

Chargers

Walmart deploys 400-kW Alpitronic HYC400 chargers (the company hinted at ABB as its second hardware supplier). The chargers feature two charging ports — one NACS (SAE J3400) and one CCS1 for maximum compatibility. It means that half of the stalls are CCS1 and the other are NACS.

We don’t have data about the number of stalls per location, but usually, there should be at least a few bays.

The Walmart app is essential for initiating a charging session and paying for charging (the payment method must be set for the user account). Pricing is displayed in the Walmart app before the start of the session (it varies by location and/or time of day) and remains locked for the duration of the session. So far, Walmart does not use credit card terminals.

We look forward to seeing how quickly the expansion of the Walmart EV charging network will progress, both in terms of the number of stations and geographically.
