ABB Introduces New DC Fast Chargers and AC Wallboxes in North America

The ABB Terra 360 model can deliver up to 360 kW and charge two vehicles simultaneously.

Published June 24, 2023

ABB has introduced new DV fast chargers and wallbox solutions for public and fleet electric vehicle charging in North America. It showcased three new products at the recent EVS36 conference, which took place on June 11-14, 2023, in Sacramento, California.

The list includes the ABB Terra 360 DC fast charger, which was first introduced in Europe, the ABB Terra AC Wallbox 40/80A, and the HVC360 power cabinet for fleets (large DC fast charging stations). All the new products were rated according to North American safety, certification, and communication standards.

ABB Terra 360

ABB shared the initial press release about its new fleet offering on Twitter just before the event:

The ABB Terra 360 is one of the most capable all-in-one DC fast chargers on the market, with an output of up to 360 kilowatts that supports high-voltage battery systems (150-920 V DC). The charger has two CCS1 plugs, so it can charge two vehicles simultaneously with dynamic power allocation.

In the future, we might also see a dual-head CCS1 and NACS setup of this model, as ABB announced that it intends to add Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) as an option.

The company wrote that it will incorporate the NACS connector into its products once the testing, design, and validation steps are complete.

ABB Terra AC Wallbox 40/80A

Next is the ABB Terra AC Wallbox 40/80A, available in two versions – 40 or 80 A, which, when used with single-phase 240 V, means a power output of up to 9.6 or 19.2 kW.

According to ABB, it’s an ideal solution for light- and medium-duty commercial vehicle fleets which have larger batteries.

“This UL-rated and Energy Star® certified AC charger is equipped with a J1772 Type 1 connector for universal EV charging, and CTEP certification for the screen display version supporting revenue-grade metering. The charger also features multiple internet connectivity and authentication options, including OCPP 1.6J, and has dedicated apps for fast commissioning as well as managing charging sessions and usage ̶ all delivering seamless integration into any commercial facility or outdoor depot.”

ABB HVC360 Power Cabinet

The third product is the ABB HVC360 power cabinet for large heavy-duty fast charging stations. One unit can provide power for up to four individual stalls or dispensers at a time.

“The new HVC360 power cabinet enables ultimate site design flexibility by charging up to 4 buses or trucks at the same time, being installed back-to-back, side-to-side, or along a wall, and allowing charging dispensers to be set as far as 328 feet (100 meters) from the HVC360 power cabinet itself.”

Just like in the case of the ABB Terra 360 DC fast charger, the ABB HVC360 also has dynamic charging capability, allowing it to allocate different levels of power to each charging dispenser based on the number of vehicles plugged in or their charging requirements.

A single ABB HVC360 can integrate multiple dispenser types (CCS or pantograph), enabling fleet operators to mix and match the ideal charging configuration for their needs.
